Background & context

In Italy in 1943 and 1944 many towns and hill villages were fought over, and their tightly packed stone houses were easy to defend. At Ortona on the Adriatic coast, Canadian troops advanced house by house in December 1943, breaking passages through dividing walls so they did not have to cross streets under fire. Whole districts were left in ruins.

On the tabletop

On its own the ruin stands in for a wrecked house on the edge of a village. Line up several ruins or set them around a square and you get a broken street where fights happen at close range. Leave alleys between the buildings so infantry can move while vehicles only have a few ways through. That gives your table a clear focus for house-to-house fighting.
