Background & context

In hot regions, cooking was often done in a separate open building away from the living huts. That kept the heat away from the sleeping quarters, let smoke escape and reduced the risk of fire. Military camps in the Pacific War of 1941-1945 often adopted this layout when troops stayed in one place for longer. Field kitchens under thatched roofs were a familiar sight on New Guinea, in Burma and on the islands of the South Pacific.

On the tabletop

Because the kitchen is built open, it reads on the table as a shelter rather than a closed house. Put it next to living quarters and your camp tells more of a story than just places to sleep. In a scenario it can become the supply objective that a raiding party has to destroy or capture. It also fits at the edge of a village or a plantation.
