Background & context

In the grain-growing regions of Ukraine and southern Russia, windmills stood outside many villages, mostly timber post mills that were turned into the wind as a whole. There the miller ground the grain for the surrounding farms. In the flat countryside the mills could be seen from far away and gave troops of both sides a point of orientation as they advanced across the steppe.

On the tabletop

Standing 15 cm tall, the windmill can be seen from anywhere on the table and works as a landmark or scenario objective. Put it on a hill or at the edge of the village, where it breaks up lines of sight across open fields. Infantry pressed against the base of the mill finds cover from fire coming from the other side. It gives a battle on the steppe of Ukraine or southern Russia a fixed point of reference.
