A solid farmhouse built for the harsh climate of the East. Maria's House comes UV-printed and unassembled, with a removable roof, a colourful interior and clear acrylic panes for the windows.

Background & context

Russian farmhouses were built against the cold: thick walls of round logs, small windows and a large masonry stove in the middle, on top of which people often slept in winter. In spring and autumn the rasputitsa, the season of mud, turned country tracks into mire. In autumn 1941 it slowed the German advance on Moscow, and soldiers of both sides sought out every house that offered a dry floor and a warm stove.

On the tabletop

Take off the roof, place the figures inside and a whole infantry squad moves into Maria's House. Built with closed doors, the house looks barricaded, while open doors show a village caught in the middle of the fighting. Put it in the centre of the table as a winter quarter both sides fight over. It carries autumn and winter battles on the Eastern Front, when troops need every solid roof.
