Product details

Background & context

A Russian village usually consisted of a row of timber houses along a single street, each with a garden, a shed and a fence. In the winter of 1941/42 these houses became vital to both armies, because anyone without a roof in hard frost lost men to cold and frostbite. German and Soviet units therefore often fought for villages as winter quarters, and many were burned down during retreats.

On the tabletop

Two houses of the same size already give you a short village street for a fight to run along. Each one holds a whole infantry squad, so both sides can occupy a building each, or a platoon can hold the pair. You set the doors open or closed for each house separately when you build them. Standing 12 cm tall, they screen whatever gathers behind them.
