Background & context

Beyond the large apartment blocks, much of Stalingrad consisted of small houses with yards, sheds and workshops, especially in the workers' settlements near the factories. Many were built of wood and burned down after the air raids, leaving only chimneys and masonry standing. These districts saw fighting as bitter as in the centre, often over single plots of land.

On the tabletop

House and garage stand apart, so you decide whether they form a tight yard or leave an alley open between them. Both are low enough to represent looser housing among taller ruins. Post small infantry teams inside to hold a crossroads or an approach. At the edge of the table the pair marks the transition from the city centre to the workers' settlements.
