Description

With a footprint of 16.5 x 19 cm, this three-level townhouse is built wide. Shutters and doors can be assembled open or closed, and the levels lift off so you can play inside the colourful interiors.

Background & context

Wooden shutters were fitted to almost every French house and closed against the weather and prying eyes. In street fighting, soldiers often avoided the open road and broke through the walls from one house to the next. Each floor had to be cleared on its own, which greatly slowed the advance through the towns and villages of Normandy in the summer of 1944.

On the tabletop

Closed shutters suggest an abandoned house, open ones a house where someone is watching the street; you make that choice during assembly. Inside you spread a whole infantry squad across three levels that lift off one by one. Its wide footprint takes up a lot of space and anchors an entire street. In Normandy 1944, place it where the attacker has to pass.
