Description

Light-coloured fieldstone walls with pillars and gates, as they enclosed Normandy farms and orchards in 1944, at 15 mm scale (1:100). All parts come pre-painted and run to roughly one metre when placed end to end.

Background & context

In rural Normandy, fieldstone walls had enclosed farmyards, churchyards and orchards for centuries, built from local rock. Among the apple orchards for cider and calvados lay German positions in 1944 that used such walls as ready-made breastworks. Anti-tank guns often waited behind farm walls for Allied tanks rolling along narrow lanes. Taking such a position required artillery or an infantry move around the flank.

On the tabletop

Run the stone wall around a farmstead such as the homestead with stable, and the yard becomes a closed position. Infantry or an anti-tank gun take cover behind the sections, with the pillars marking the corners. The gates decide where vehicles can get into the yard. Combine long and short pieces to line farm tracks, churchyards or orchards.
