A townhouse with a restaurant on the ground floor, large windows facing the street and lettering on the gable, for town fighting in Normandy in 1944 at 15 mm scale (1:100). All HDF parts come colour-printed.

Background & context

Almost every town in Normandy had its restaurant or inn on the market square in 1944, often with advertising painted on the side wall. During the occupation, German staffs and units frequently took over such houses as billets or canteens. In the weeks after the landings many town centres came under artillery fire and air attack, and Caen was hit especially hard in June and July 1944. Of many inns, only the outer walls were left standing.

On the tabletop

The restaurant belongs on the market square: whoever holds the upper windows overlooks the adjoining streets. Behind the large panes on the ground floor you place a squad watching the crossroads. With the floors lifted off, you spread several infantry squads across dining room, upper floor and attic. At 12 cm tall the house towers over low farm buildings and breaks lines of sight across the table.
