A Normandy stone farmhouse with an annex and a long stable beside it, for fighting in the countryside in summer 1944 at 15 mm scale (1:100). The HDF parts are colour-printed, and roofs and floors lift off.

Background & context

Outside the towns, most people in Normandy in 1944 lived on scattered farms in the bocage, a landscape of small fields and dense hedgerows on earth banks. House, stable and barn usually stood close together and were built from local stone. For Allied troops any of these farms could turn out to be a strongpoint, as the hedges limited visibility to a few metres. The fighting in the hedgerow country dragged on from June until the end of July 1944.

On the tabletop

Set the farmstead at the edge of a hedgerow landscape and attackers no longer have a clear path between fields and farm buildings. The farmhouse takes several infantry squads, while the low stable beside it screens vehicles from distant observers. Placed back to back, both buildings form a closed row of about 27.7 cm. Add stone or brick walls from the same range to create a walled yard for both sides to fight over.
