Background & context

Almost every village in Normandy had a stone church whose tower was the tallest structure for miles around. That is exactly why church towers were sought-after posts for artillery observers and snipers in 1944. The other side often shelled them deliberately, and many towers collapsed or were badly damaged. In Sainte-Mère-Église an American paratrooper was left hanging from the church tower on the night of the landings, an image still known today.

On the tabletop

The nave is large enough for several infantry squads, which you set up inside once the roofs are off. Put a spotter or a sniper in the bell tower to watch over the village from above. With a 24 x 17 cm footprint, the church makes a natural village centre for streets and squares to gather around. Doors can be built open or closed.
