A red brick wall with pillars and large and small gates, for yards and gardens in Normandy in 1944 at 15 mm scale (1:100). Together the pre-painted HDF sections make about one metre of wall.

Background & context

Before the war, brick walls in France surrounded many gardens, factory yards and the grounds of wealthy families on the edge of town. For infantry in the summer of 1944 such walls were welcome cover, and soldiers knocked loopholes into them or placed machine guns behind the pillars. Tanks simply broke through where needed rather than drive through predictable gateways. Bullet marks on old yard walls can still be seen in Normandy today.

On the tabletop

With about 102 cm in total you can enclose an entire manor farm or run a boundary right across the table. At only 2.4 cm high, the wall gives infantry cover without blocking the view of buildings behind it. The gates channel vehicles through fixed openings, while short sections close gaps between houses. Thanks to the corner pillars the wall can follow irregular property lines.
