Background & context

Die Johanniter verloren 1291 das Heilige Land, nahmen sich Rhodos und wurden dort zur Seemacht, bis die Osmanen sie 1522 vertrieben. Karl V. überließ ihnen darauf Malta. Als 1565 eine osmanische Belagerungsarmee auf der Insel landete, hielten wenige hundert Ritter mit maltesischen und spanischen Soldaten vier Monate lang stand. Danach galt der Orden im katholischen Europa als lebender Beweis, dass die Osmanen aufzuhalten waren, und rekrutierte weiter aus dem Hochadel.

On the tabletop

Four Knights Hospitaller on foot, armed with pike, sword and shield, longsword and arquebus, form a small elite group in Pike & Shotte. With Maltese and Spanish troops the Order held out for four months against an Ottoman siege of Malta in 1565. Use the figures as the command of an Order contingent or place them where a breach must be held. Together with the Wars of Religion infantry regiment they form the garrison of Malta.
