Support platoons were critical for infantry units because they provided leadership, observation, medical services, and heavy weapons. Medium machine guns delivered direct fire support, while medium mortars enabled indirect fire against covered targets. The Support Group supplements Waffen-SS infantry with leadership and heavy support.
