Beschreibung

Following the heavy losses of summer 1944, the Wehrmacht established 78 Volksgrenadier divisions - armed with the StG44 and led by a core of experienced soldiers. These units fought in the Ardennes Offensive, along the Siegfried Line, and in the final defensive battles on the Eastern and Western Fronts.

Hintergrund & Einordnung

Following the catastrophic losses in the summer of 1944 - the collapse of Army Group Centre during Operation Bagration and the loss of the 5th Panzer Army in Normandy - the Wehrmacht created approximately 78 Volksgrenadier Divisions from autumn 1944 onwards. It is important to distinguish: Volksgrenadier Divisions should not be confused with the Volkssturm. While the Volkssturm consisted of old men and adolescents with minimal equipment, Volksgrenadier Divisions were formed around a core of experienced veterans, supplemented by "freed up" personnel from the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. Many of these divisions showed surprisingly high morale and fighting power. Armed with the modern StG44, Volksgrenadiers fought in the Ardennes Offensive, on the Siegfried Line, and in the final defensive battles on German soil.

Einsatz im Spiel

Volksgrenadiers are versatile late-war infantry for German Late-War armies. Equipped with the StG44, they bring solid firepower at short to medium ranges. They are particularly suitable for defensively oriented scenarios - holding key positions, fighting rearguard actions, or defending fortified lines. In Ardennes or Reichsverteidigung scenarios, they are a thematically authentic core unit.
