Description

The Vivandière was a familiar sight in the armies of the Napoleonic Wars - as a sutler, she provided soldiers with food, drink, and anything that made life in the field more bearable. This characterful metal model shows her with a pistol drawn, ready to defend her wares, while her packed donkey waits patiently. The model comes with two head and two arm options and can be equipped with a brandy barrel and glass.

Background & context

Vivandièren zogen mit den Regimentern und verkauften, was der Nachschub nicht hergab: Schnaps, Tabak, Brot, Nähzeug. Offiziell war der Handel im Feld nur den Vivandiers erlaubt, doch die standen im Drill und im Gefecht - also führten ihre Frauen das Geschäft. Ab den 1790ern waren sie in den französischen Armeen fest eingeplant, mit Ausweis, Karren oder Maultier und einem Platz im Regimentsgefüge. Ungefährlich war der Posten nicht: Wer nah genug an der Linie stand, um Wasser und Branntwein zu reichen, stand auch im Feuer.

On the tabletop

The vivandière with her pistol and heavily laden donkey are not a unit in Black Powder but a scene for French armies of 1789 to 1815. Vivandières followed the regiments and sold food, drink and tobacco, so their place is in camp, with the baggage train or beside a resting battalion. Two heads and two arms let you decide whether she defends her wares or pours from the cask. In scenarios she works well as an objective.
