    Background & context

Dragoons were originally conceived as a hybrid: horsemen who dismount and fight on foot if need be. In practice the thirty regiments of the Grande Armée became regular battle cavalry, recognisable by the brass-coloured helmet skull with horsehair mane. The regiments differed in their collar, cuff and piping colours; elite companies wore fringed epaulettes and often bearskin caps. The long-tailed coat was supposed to disappear in 1812 but held on well into 1813.

    On the tabletop

The twelve dragoons let you field French battle cavalry for the Russian campaign of 1812 or for Leipzig in 1813. Their sabres are raised or levelled for the charge, and in games they break into shaken lines and chase down fleeing enemies. Many regiments still wore the long-tailed coat well into 1813. The choice of heads makes them a line or an elite company, and an officer, trumpeter and sapper lead the troopers.
