Product details

Background & context

Alongside its fusilier companies, every French line regiment had two elite companies: the grenadiers as the heavy fist, the voltigeurs as the light troops, trained in marksmanship and outpost duty. Between 1807 and 1814 both were more and more often detached from their battalions and combined into elite formations of their own. On Spanish roads and in German villages this produced exactly the picture this kit shows: loose groups instead of a formed line.

On the tabletop

The 40 grenadiers and voltigeurs stand in skirmish poses on individual round bases. They represent the elite companies that between 1807 and 1814 were often detached from their battalions and grouped into units of their own. In games they spread out in open order ahead of the column, harass the enemy line and occupy villages or wood edges. In smaller actions in Spain they can also form a force on their own, backed by French line infantry.
