Product details

Background & context

Their first action came in November 1943 on Bougainville, followed by Guam and Peleliu, and in 1945 by Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Scout dogs went ahead of the point and gave warning of positions, ambushes and concealed riflemen, often before the first shot was fired. Other animals carried messages between units and got through more reliably than human runners. On Guam a cemetery of their own still commemorates the dogs that died doing so.

On the tabletop

Two handlers with their dogs add a special kind of reconnaissance to a USMC army in Bolt Action. Scout dogs alerted their handlers to enemy positions, ambushes and hidden snipers, often before any shot was fired, while other dogs carried messages between units. You therefore use the teams ahead of your squads in dense island terrain. They suit games from Bougainville in 1943 via Guam and Peleliu to Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
