Product details

Background & context

The US Army was poorly prepared for the winter of 1944. Supply planners had counted on the war ending before Christmas and had given fuel and ammunition priority over winter clothing. When the German offensive in the Ardennes broke in December, many infantrymen stood in the snow in thin field jackets, and trench foot and frostbite cost whole regiments their fighting strength. Greatcoats, scarves and overshoes were worn as and when they turned up.

On the tabletop

Bundled up in winter clothing, these five GIs fight in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944. They add to an American rifle section for snowy woods and villages, among them a rifleman taking aim and a man with a Thompson. As winter gear reached the troops unevenly at the time, you can vary their clothing freely when painting. On a snow-covered table you can recreate the defensive fighting of December.
