    Background & context

Nothing in the US artillery worked without a map. Every observer carried a gridded sheet, read off the target as a coordinate and reported it to the fire direction centre, which worked out firing data for each battery. That gave rise to Time on Target: the shells of many batteries landed at the same instant, with no ranging shots and no warning. To the troops up front, an observer with a working radio was often worth more than another platoon of infantry.

    On the tabletop

Set 2 shows the observer team standing. One man works the radio, a second has the map in front of him and the third searches for the target with binoculars, or alternatively gets a hand holding a pistol. This lets you represent a forward artillery observer or your platoon's command post. As the figures stand upright, they belong behind buildings or tall cover. Together with Set 1 you get a larger team with lying, kneeling and standing poses.
