Background & context

In the US infantry, reconnaissance and sniping lay close together in doctrine: the task was to take out enemy officers and so strike at the leadership. The 60 mm mortar was the heaviest weapon a squad could still lug by itself, though at just under twenty kilos it was already a lot to ask of three men. Flamethrowers were used above all in the Pacific against tunnels and bunkers, and for the Normandy landings their number was specially increased in order to burn breaches into the fortifications.

On the tabletop

These three teams give an American infantry platoon in Bolt Action its support weapons. The sniper team stays well back and picks out officers and weapons teams. The light 60 mm mortar fires in an arc over cover at enemies in trenches and behind walls. The flamethrower has to get close, but then clears buildings and bunkers. Alongside the officer and the rifle squads, they fill the support slots of your platoon.
