Background & context

The US Army went to war in 1942 with little combat experience and quickly made up for it in Tunisia. At platoon level a great deal then depended on the support weapons: the .30 calibre Browning M1919A4 kept enemy infantry's heads down at around 500 rounds per minute, while the 81mm M1 mortar stood behind cover and fired where nobody was looking. The medic, for his part, was the only figure in the platoon whose work was not measured in ammunition.

On the tabletop

Twelve metal figures add leadership and heavy support to a US Army list in Bolt Action. The officer gives your platoon its orders, while the medic treats the wounded and keeps squads in the fight for longer. The tripod-mounted Browning M1919A4 acts as a medium machine gun and covers enemy infantry with sustained fire, and the 81 mm M1 mortar reaches targets from cover that your riflemen cannot see. Together they cover command, fire support and indirect fire for a platoon.
