Background & context

US airborne troops in World War II were designed for rapid self-sufficiency: after jumping, they had to make do with what they carried until regular supply lines could be secured. Heavy support weapons were initially in short supply - making portable systems such as mortars, sniper rifles, and the Bazooka all the more important. In the winter of 1944/45, US Airborne units operated in extreme conditions, including in the Ardennes, where these light weapon systems once again proved their tactical value.

On the tabletop

After the jump, paratroopers had only the support weapons a man could carry himself, and these six figures in winter clothing represent three of them. The sniper team picks out enemy officers, the light mortar drops high explosive on enemies in cover, and the bazooka stops armoured vehicles. In Bolt Action they extend a simple Airborne rifle platoon with tasks its rifle squads cannot handle. Three order dice are included.
