    Product details

    Background & context

Turcopoles were the locally recruited light cavalry of the Crusader states, often the sons of mixed marriages or baptised men from the region. The Crusaders had quickly learned that their heavy knights alone achieved little against the mounted archers of the East, so they raised horsemen who fought in just the same way. Templars and Hospitallers led whole Turcopole detachments under an officer of their own, the Turcopolier.

    On the tabletop

Turcopoles were the locally recruited light cavalry of the crusader states, here twelve riders in 28 mm scale. Built with bows they fight like the horse archers they faced, and with lance and shield as light lancers. You use them to scout, to screen your heavy knights against skirmishers and to pursue a beaten enemy. Among the Templars and Hospitallers they were led by an officer of their own, the Turcopolier.
