Background & context

Octagonal halls, known as hakkakudō, have existed in Japan since the 8th century, a well-known example being the Yumedono at Hōryū-ji near Nara. Almost every temple had a bell house with a large bronze bell struck with a wooden beam. In the Sengoku period temples were also centres of power with their own warrior monks, and in 1571 Oda Nobunaga had the monasteries on Mount Hiei burned. Torii often stood in temple grounds at that time, as Buddhism and Shinto were closely intertwined.

On the tabletop

The temple forms the centre of a scenario in which samurai storm a temple or monks defend it. With the roof off you place figures in the hall, and the resin doors show whether the entrance is open or shut. Use the bell house as an alarm post, while the torii marks the way into the grounds. Add courtyard walls, stone lanterns and a temizuya to close off the precinct.
