Product details

Background & context

The wars of the 15th and 16th centuries hit Japanese towns hard. In the Ōnin War from 1467, large parts of Kyoto burned, leaving temples and noble residences in ruins. Earthen walls topped with tiles enclosed samurai residences, temple precincts and merchant yards, and were often torn down or set alight in the fighting. After the Sengoku period, the new lords had many towns around their castles rebuilt.

On the tabletop

The gaps in the wall give your troops routes into the courtyard that a defender cannot simply seal off. Infantry find cover behind the intact stretches, while the breaches become tight choke points. Combine the ruins with the undamaged courtyard walls and the extension to build a compound that has already seen one assault. For battles in a contested Sengoku castle town, let samurai advance over the rubble.
