Background & context

The Waffen-SS was the armed wing of the NSDAP's Schutzstaffel, ideologically selected and given priority in equipment and supplies. Its divisions served on almost every front of the Second World War and were portrayed as an elite by opponents and by their own propaganda alike. At the same time its units took part in massacres such as Oradour-sur-Glane and Malmedy and were part of the apparatus of extermination; at Nuremberg the organisation was declared criminal. On the gaming table the box represents a battle group of 1944/45; historically this force has to be placed in context without glorification.

On the tabletop

Everything in this box is plastic, so when building the 36 infantry you decide for yourself who becomes the officer, who leads the squads and how they are armed. They form the rifle platoon, with the mortar and MG teams behind them as weapons teams with a clear field of fire. The Sd.Kfz. 251/10 gets a squad to a mission objective quickly. You use the StuG III against tanks and fortified positions, and you dig the PaK 40 in beside a road until enemy vehicles roll in front of its barrel. The result is a small battle group of 1944/45 with infantry, support and two vehicles.
