Background & context

Devereux war der Sohn des von Elisabeth I. hingerichteten 2. Earl of Essex und einer der reichsten Männer Englands, am Hof Karls I. aber ohne Rückhalt. Seine militärische Ausbildung holte er sich im Dreißigjährigen Krieg auf protestantischer Seite in Deutschland und den Niederlanden. 1642 machte ihn das Parlament zum Lord General aller seiner Truppen; bei Edgehill stand er selbst mit der Pike in der Hand in der Schlachtlinie. Seine Soldaten nannten ihn Old Robin, sein Regiment hieß Olde Robins Foote.

On the tabletop

Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, takes the salute in the saddle and leads your Parliamentarian army of the early war years in Pike & Shotte as Lord General. With his calm pose he belongs behind the line, from where he gives orders to your brigades. In 1642 Parliament made him commander-in-chief of all its forces, and at Edgehill he even stood in the battle line himself with a pike. He had gained his military experience in the Thirty Years War on the Protestant side.
