Product details

Background & context

At the entrance to a Shinto shrine there traditionally stands a temizuya, an open pavilion with a stone water basin. Visitors use a wooden ladle to rinse their hands and mouth before entering the shrine. Ritual purification has been part of Shinto since ancient times, and many Buddhist temples adopted the custom as well. Samurai and farmers alike kept to this rule before prayer.

On the tabletop

Place the temizuya at the entrance to your temple or shrine precinct, where attackers have to pass first. Figures find shelter under the roof, and with the roof lifted off you can place them inside easily. With a footprint of 90 x 100 mm it forms a small obstacle that partly breaks lines of sight. Together with hokora, stone lanterns and a main hall, you build a complete shrine precinct.
