    Background & context

    The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs maintained armed formations of its own that did not formally belong to the Red Army. Border troops together with convoy and security regiments guarded supply lines, bridges and prisoner transports, set up blocking lines behind attacking rifle divisions and time and again ended up in combat themselves, for instance at Brest in 1941 and later at Stalingrad. The border troops could be recognised by their green facings and cap bands.

    On the tabletop

    An NCO and four men with submachine guns, three riflemen and a light machine gun team make an NKVD squad in Bolt Action. The troops of the People's Commissariat guarded borders and rear areas, but also fought at the front at Stalingrad and in the Crimea. You use the squad in Soviet lists as infantry with plenty of automatic weapons, or place it at bridges and checkpoints behind the front in scenarios.
