Soviet naval infantry - dubbed "Black Death" by German soldiers - fought on the toughest fronts of World War II in their distinctive black uniforms and striped telnyashka undershirts. This set depicts a battle-hardened veteran squad with heavy submachine gun presence, typical of Soviet naval infantry offensive close-combat operations.

Background & context

With the Soviet fleet largely blockaded in its ports, numerous sailors were deployed as front-line infantrymen - often still in their distinctive black naval uniforms with striped Telnyashka undershirts. From these forces emerged specialized marine infantry units: forty brigades and five regiments that made a name for themselves in both defense and coastal landing operations on the Baltic and Black Seas. Their solid military training and strong esprit de corps made them particularly reliable units in the Soviet army. Among their German opponents, they earned the nickname "Black Death" due to their dark uniforms and battle cry.

On the tabletop

Almost the whole squad carries submachine guns: ten sailors, an NCO and a man with a light machine gun form a veteran unit of Soviet naval infantry in Bolt Action. Their fire is densest at short range, so you lead them close to the enemy, for example through rubble and city blocks. These brigades fought at Odessa, on the Kerch peninsula and in Stalingrad. Because of their dark uniforms the Germans called the sailors the Black Death.
