Their reputation was so feared by the Germans that they gave them their own nickname: the Black Death.

    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    As the Soviet fleet had little room to maneuver at sea during World War II, naval personnel were massively deployed as ground fighters - often still in their black uniforms with sailor caps and striped telnyashka undershirts. The Soviet Union established a total of forty naval brigades and five regiments, which distinguished themselves in defense as well as in amphibious operations on the coasts of the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Thanks to their prior training and a strong esprit de corps, they were considered above-average combat-effective units - the German side simply called them the Black Death.
