The Soviet Naval Brigade fought in their distinctive black uniforms and striped undershirts on the toughest sections of the Eastern Front - from the defence of Stalingrad to coastal landings on the Black Sea. Their reputation was so feared by the Germans that they gave them their own nickname: the Black Death.

Background & context

As the Soviet fleet had little room to maneuver at sea during World War II, naval personnel were massively deployed as ground fighters - often still in their black uniforms with sailor caps and striped telnyashka undershirts. The Soviet Union established a total of forty naval brigades and five regiments, which distinguished themselves in defense as well as in amphibious operations on the coasts of the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Thanks to their prior training and a strong esprit de corps, they were considered above-average combat-effective units - the German side simply called them the Black Death.

On the tabletop

Twelve sailors in black naval uniform form a Soviet naval infantry squad in Bolt Action. An NCO with a submachine gun leads, while two light machine guns and nine rifles give the squad more sustained fire than an ordinary rifle squad. Under the special rules of the Soviet army lists, Naval Brigade units count as particularly tough fighters at close quarters. They suit scenarios on the Baltic and Black Sea, both in defence and in coastal landings.
