Background & context

In the house-to-house fighting from Stalingrad to Berlin, the hand grenade was often the only weapon that could get round a corner. The Red Army threw the stick-shaped RGD-33, later the compact RG-42, and with them the cast-iron F-1, which was called the Limonka because of its shape. Assault groups of just a few men worked their way forward with them room by room. The pattern was always the same: throw, follow up, move on.

On the tabletop

With grenades raised, these three Red Army men stand for the assault groups of house fighting. From Stalingrad to Berlin small teams worked their way through buildings with grenades, because a grenade reached around corners and through doors where no rifle could. On the table you place the figures at the head of a squad storming a trench or a house, so it is clear who is about to attack. They look best in ruins and street fighting.
