    Background & context

The purges of the late 1930s cost the Red Army a large part of its experienced officer corps, and from 1941 the gap had to be filled in months rather than years. Platoon commanders were often very young, came out of crash courses and led from the front because radios long remained in short supply. Only from 1943 was there enough signals equipment to call in artillery fire reliably. The medical personnel, meanwhile, worked right in the firing line.

    On the tabletop

Two officers, a medic and a radio operator lead your Soviet infantry in Bolt Action. The two officers each take a platoon or share platoon and company command. The medic treats the wounded, and the radio operator acts as a forward observer or as a spotter directing a mortar's fire. Like many young Soviet officers, the figures lead their men from the front in attack and defence.
