Product details

Background & context

While the Red Army frequently had to make do with scarce transport and supply resources in World War II, pioneer units were considered indispensable special forces. Their skills in bridge building, demolition, fortification, and mine clearance could not be replaced by regular conscripts. Assault pioneers took on the most dangerous task in combat: the forceful elimination of enemy strongholds and the clearing of tank routes. Due to the extraordinarily high casualty rate, these units were sometimes equipped with the SN-42 body armor - one of the few instances where Soviet infantry went into action with personal protective armor.

On the tabletop

In Bolt Action the ten assault engineers are the squad you send against enemy strongpoints and obstacles. Historically these specialists had the job of knocking out bunkers and fortified positions during an advance and clearing the way for the tanks. Some units wore the SN-42 body armour for this, which offered protection against splinters at close range. Lead the squad deliberately against buildings and positions where ordinary riflemen would fail.
