    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    In World War II, the Red Army consistently relied on specialized weapon groups to increase firepower at the company and platoon level. Snipers held a particularly high status in Soviet military doctrine: training programs systematically fostered new recruits, and successful marksmen - including many women - were elevated to propagandistic icons. The light 50mm M1940 mortar supplemented the infantry with indirect fire, while ROKS-2 flamethrowers were used not only against fortified positions but explicitly also in anti-tank combat. In the Winter War on the Eastern Front, Soviet infantry, equipped for cold weather and with superior knowledge of the terrain, often had an advantage over their adversaries.
