    Background & context

    In 1941 the KV-1 was a rude awakening for the Wehrmacht: its armour shrugged off hits against which German anti-tank guns could do nothing, and single vehicles blocked entire lines of advance until they ran out of ammunition. The KV-2 put a box-shaped turret with a 152mm howitzer on the same chassis, intended for breaking open bunkers. Neither was reliable, but as long as they kept moving, the infantry followed behind them.

    On the tabletop

    Numbers are what count here: 80 Red Army soldiers in winter gear work out at eight squads of ten men and will fill even large games almost entirely with infantry. The HQ of 4 metal figures leads, while the MMG team and the medium mortar team give covering fire from the rear. You build the tank as either a KV-1 with the standard turret or a KV-2 with the tall howitzer turret, which is meant more for houses and positions. While the squads use their numbers to occupy objectives and absorb losses, the KV draws the enemy's anti-tank fire onto itself.
