Background & context

The Red Army built up its sniping arm earlier and more consistently than any other army of the war, with its own schools, competitions and newspaper reports that turned individual marksmen into role models. The 50mm mortar Model 1940, by contrast, was plain manual work at company level, light enough for two men and good for fire out to a few hundred metres. And the ROKS flamethrower was disguised as a rifle with a knapsack, so that its bearer did not immediately stand out as the first target.

On the tabletop

Six figures make three support teams for a Soviet platoon in Bolt Action. The sniper team recalls the marksmen the Red Army became known for at Stalingrad and Leningrad, and engages single important targets from long range. The 50 mm Model 1940 mortar fires over cover, while the flamethrower closes in on occupied buildings and positions. This makes up for squads carrying many submachine guns having little effect at a distance.
