Background & context

The Red Army entered World War II with significant structural weaknesses, stemming from Stalin's purges of the officer corps in the late 1930s. Many commanders had little experience and operated in a climate that punished rather than encouraged initiative. Heavy support weapons, such as the 82mm battalion mortar, were treated as an artillery component in Soviet doctrine and used in concentrated batteries. The Maxim machine gun was a weapon with decades of tradition, having already served in World War I-robust and proven, but heavy enough that even the Germans found little use for captured examples.

On the tabletop

A command group, a Maxim machine gun and an 82 mm mortar in metal cover command and heavy weapons in your Soviet list for Bolt Action. The command group leads your platoon. The wheeled Maxim Model 1910 with its gun shield keeps enemy infantry in check with sustained fire, and the PM-41 mortar fires from cover at targets behind obstacles. With rifle squads from other boxes it becomes a fully led platoon with fire support.
