Product details

Background & context

The Soviet Union was among the early pioneers of modern airborne operations, possessing the world's largest airborne force at the outbreak of the war. However, the German invasion in 1941 quickly forced the Soviet command to deploy these specialized units as regular infantry, where they were practically wiped out in the defensive battles. It was not until the winter of 1941/42 that Soviet airborne units were again used in their intended role - without achieving the desired strategic results. Despite extraordinary fighting spirit, these units suffered from a chronic lack of heavy anti-tank weaponry and insufficient support.

On the tabletop

In 1941 the Soviet Union had the largest airborne force in the world, and this squad of ten metal figures represents it in Bolt Action. With five submachine guns and a light machine gun team it is built for close-range fighting, backed by three riflemen. It suits scenarios based on the drops outside Moscow in the first winter of the war, or games in which the paratroopers fight as ordinary infantry, as they did at Stalingrad.
