Product details

Background & context

Minka is the name for the houses of ordinary people in pre-modern Japan, meaning farmers, craftsmen and merchants. They stood on a frame of timber posts and beams, with walls of wood, clay and paper sliding doors. Inside there was usually an earth-floored area for work and a raised living room with a hearth. In the Sengoku period such villages were repeatedly occupied or burned by passing troops.

On the tabletop

As a single house by the road, minka A gives a small skirmish a place to fight over. A group of ashigaru find cover behind its walls, and the building splits the table into two fields of view. With a footprint of 150 x 170 mm it lines up neatly with minka B and C to form a row of houses. Add a kura storehouse and a hokora next to it and you have a farmstead.
