Both sides in one box: 38 Spaniards against 27 Frenchmen, designed for the small actions of the Peninsular War. 15 sprues can be mixed across the board, so that Confederation of the Rhine troops, gendarmerie or Spanish volunteers can be built too.

Background & context

The Peninsular War of 1807 to 1814 was seldom decided in great battles. Mostly it was the small war: convoys ambushed in a sunken lane, villages that changed hands twice a day, and guerrillas who vanished into the mountains after the ambush. For the occupying troops this meant that whole divisions were tied down on security duties. That is exactly the kind of action this box depicts: small forces, short distances, no front lines.

On the tabletop

The box supplies both sides for small actions in Spain, 38 Spaniards against 27 Frenchmen. On the Spanish side you combine regular infantry and their command with the guerrillas from the five guerrilla sprues, so that soldiers and irregulars hold a sunken lane or a village together. You put the French together from the command sprue, the battalion sprue and the four sprues of elite companies, as the escort of a convoy for instance. Play is in small, loose groups rather than in formed battalions. With the three painting guides and their conversion notes you can also build Confederation of the Rhine troops from the same sprues.
