Product details

Background & context

After his victory at the Milvian Bridge in 312 Constantine disbanded the Praetorian Guard, which had stood on the side of his opponent Maxentius. Its place was taken by the scholae palatinae, mounted guard units that accompanied the emperor and answered to the magister officiorum. Scutarii means shield-bearers, but by this time simply denoted guardsmen. The Notitia Dignitatum lists several scholae of this name and records the shield pattern of the second.

On the tabletop

This sheet provides 36 pre-cut shield designs of the Schola Scutariorum Secunda for your Late Roman guard cavalry. Constantine raised the scholae as mounted guards after the battle at the Milvian Bridge in 312, once he had disbanded the Praetorians. They rode as the emperor's personal escort. Apply the waterslide transfers straight to Wargames Atlantic plastic shields to set the guard visibly apart from the rest of the army.
