Product details

Background & context

The Viking Age round shield was made of wooden boards set side by side, with an iron boss in the centre protecting the hand on the grip. Finds such as the shields from the Gokstad ship in Norway show that they were painted, in that case alternately yellow and black. Anglo-Saxons and Anglo-Danes fought with very similar shields. In battle, warriors locked them rim to rim to form the shield wall, as they did one last time at Hastings in 1066.

On the tabletop

For a shield wall, mix the designs freely along the line so it looks like a gathered levy of freemen and household warriors. The damaged versions belong on the shields of men who have already seen a few fights. You can equip Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Anglo-Danes alike and field both sides of a raid on the English coast. The transfers settle best on a gloss-varnished shield face.
