Product details

Background & context

Octavian raised the legion around 41 BC; it received the name Fretensis from the Strait of Messina, where it fought against Sextus Pompeius. In the Jewish War it besieged Jerusalem and took Masada a few years later, after which it lay in garrison in Jerusalem for some two centuries. Around 300 it was moved to Aila on the Red Sea, today's Aqaba. The Notitia Dignitatum still lists it there around 400, after more than four hundred years of service.
