Product details

Background & context

The Herculiani were raised under the Tetrarchy and bear the name of Hercules, the patron god of Emperor Maximian. Together with their sister legion, the Ioviani, they formed a pair that took the field together for more than a century. Vegetius reports that both legions carried lead-weighted darts, the plumbatae, several of which each soldier kept behind his shield. The Notitia Dignitatum lists the Herculiani Seniores among the palatine legions of the West and records their shield design.

On the tabletop

An eagle on every shield identifies the Herculiani Seniores, one of the palatine legions of the Western Roman army in late antiquity. Named for Hercules, patron god of the emperor Maximian, it was raised under the Tetrarchy and took the field together with the Ioviani. According to Vegetius, soldiers of both legions carried several weighted darts behind their shields. Apply the 36 pre-cut decals straight to Wargames Atlantic plastic shields, with the Ioviani Seniores as the natural partner unit.
