Product details

Background & context

The Cornuti, the horned ones, belonged to the auxilia palatina, the elite infantry of the Late Roman field army, and were recruited from Germanic peoples on the Rhine. In 357 they stood in the front line against the Alamanni at Strasbourg under Julian. Ammianus Marcellinus describes their war cry, the barritus, which begins quietly and swells like surf against cliffs. The shield pattern is recorded in the Notitia Dignitatum, the register of offices and units of the empire from around 400.

On the tabletop

The Cornuti Seniores, the horned ones, were an elite regiment of the auxilia palatina in the Western field army, recruited from Germanic men on the Rhine. At Strasbourg in 357 they stood in the front line under Julian against the Alamanni. Their shield pattern survives in the Notitia Dignitatum and comes here as 36 pre-cut decals for Wargames Atlantic plastic shields. That lets you field one of your Late Roman infantry units as this regiment.
