Background & context

The road across the Pacific was a chain of landings: Guadalcanal in 1942, Tarawa in 1943, then Saipan, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and finally Okinawa in 1945. Every island presented the same bill, first days of bombardment, then landing craft against a shore whose defenders had sat out the shelling in bunkers. Out of this experience grew a doctrine of its own built on assault squads, flamethrowers and demolition charges. No other campaign of the war cost more per square kilometre taken.

On the tabletop

With the Marines, the way you assemble them decides how the army fights. The 42 figures from seven USMC sprues and two weapon sprues provide the command models for the HQ and enough infantry for several squads, which you equip with submachine guns and shotguns for close combat or with BARs for more firepower. Bazookas and scoped rifles give you anti-tank and snipers. The flamethrower team clears bunkers, and the medic stays with the forward squads. The two .30 cal teams and the mortar cover the advance, the 37mm anti-tank gun keeps tanks at a distance, and the M3A1 half-track brings a squad forward quickly.
