Description

A half-track with launch frames on both flanks, from which the heavy rockets were fired straight from their transport crates. The howl announced the salvo long before it struck - the troops called the launcher the Heulende Kuh.

Background & context

Der Wurfrahmen 40 war Behelf in Reinform: Stahlgestelle an die Bordwand geschraubt, darin die Raketen in ihren Versandkisten, aus denen sie auch abgefeuert wurden. Gezielt wurde, indem der Fahrer das ganze Fahrzeug ausrichtete. Ab Ende 1940 gingen die Rahmen an Pionier- und Panzergrenadiereinheiten, die damit Sturmangriffe eröffneten. Auf kurze Entfernung war die Wirkung verheerend, um Treffgenauigkeit ging es nie.

On the tabletop

Launch frames on both sides of the half-track hold heavy rockets that are fired straight from their transport crates. For your German force this is mobile rocket artillery: drive up, drop a salvo on a crowded sector and let panzergrenadiers or pioneers follow straight in. The whole vehicle is turned to aim, so accuracy matters less than the weight of the strike. Two crew figures are included, and the system was in use from late 1940.
